Heat alerts: why a daily high does not tell the whole story
The daily high summarizes the heat, but it does not show when it occurs or how long it lasts. An hourly threshold lets you monitor relevant conditions for each field.
When a forecast shows a high of 36 °C, that figure tells you it is going to be hot. But it may not be enough to make decisions in the field. It does not tell you when that temperature will be reached. It does not tell you how long it will last. And it does not tell you whether that value exceeds the limit you consider relevant for a specific field. That is why a heat alert works better when it starts with a concrete threshold rather than only the day's general high.
What the maximum temperature represents
The daily high is the highest value expected during a day. It is a useful summary. But it is still just that: a summary. A high of 36 °C may occur for a short period or persist for several hours. There can also be important differences between a day that slowly reaches that value and one that exceeds it early and remains hot for much of the afternoon. For some decisions, that progression matters more than the final number.
The problem with daily summaries
Daily forecasts condense a great deal of information. That makes them easy to read, but it also removes detail. Two days, for example, might show the same high of 35 °C and still unfold very differently:
- Day A: exceeds 35 °C for only one hour.
- Day B: remains above 35 °C for several hours.
The maximum is the same; the situation is not necessarily so. That is why Vienor uses hourly forecasts to evaluate alert rules.
How a heat alert works in Vienor
Each heat rule has a temperature threshold defined by the user. For example:
Notify me if the forecast temperature reaches or exceeds 35 °C in this field.
Vienor reviews the hourly forecast and looks for that condition within the configured window. If a temperature at or above the threshold appears, it can generate an alert. The system evaluates the forecast again every 30 minutes.
You define the threshold
There is no single temperature that is relevant to every situation. The value you want to monitor may depend on what you are doing, the crop, the stage of the season, and field conditions. That is why the rule does not impose a universal number. The user decides which temperature to treat as the limit. This turns a generic forecast figure into a personalized condition.
How far the threshold is exceeded also matters
Vienor does not treat a temperature just above the configured limit in the same way as a much higher temperature. Heat alerts have severity levels. They can be classified as:
Low
Medium
High
Critical
Severity depends on how far the forecast temperature exceeds the threshold defined by the user. This distinguishes an event close to the limit from one where the exceedance is much greater.
Humidity can provide context
Heat does not occur in isolation from other weather variables. Vienor can include additional information in the alert. For example, when relative humidity is high, that condition appears as part of the event's context. It can also indicate when wind is very light. Temperature remains the alert trigger. But the message can include other variables that help provide a clearer picture of the situation.
An alert is not the same as checking “tomorrow's high”
The daily high answers:
What is the highest forecast temperature?
A rule answers a different question:
Will the temperature exceed the value I defined as important?
That change may seem small, but it removes the need to manually review the forecast for each field. If the value does not exceed the threshold, there is no condition to report. If it does, Vienor can notify you.
Each field can have different criteria
Rules are configured for each field. This allows you to use different thresholds according to the situation. One field may have an alert configured for 34 °C. Another may use 38 °C. Not because Vienor determines the correct value, but because the platform lets the user monitor the criteria they need.
The forecast can change
A heat alert is not a guaranteed future measurement. It is a condition detected within a weather forecast. As new data becomes available, that forecast may change. That is why Vienor updates and evaluates it again every 30 minutes. A temperature that previously appeared above the threshold may fall in a later update. The opposite can also happen. The value of automatic monitoring lies precisely in not relying on a single check made many hours earlier.
An alert horizon of up to 72 hours
Vienor's rules work with hourly forecasts extending up to three days ahead. This makes it possible to detect heat conditions within that horizon when they appear in the model. It does not mean that temperature can be predicted with the same accuracy throughout all 72 hours. Nor does it mean that Vienor will always provide three days of warning. The actual lead time depends on when the condition appears in the forecast and on the configured window.
